Beloved by professionals, Smart Tweezers are a sophisticated tool with a basic accuracy of 0.2%, each arriving with an NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate. The high-precision gold plated tweezers allow to easily handle components as small as 0201 size. The low value parasitics are about 1pF capacitance and 30 mOhms resistance of the tweezer tips. The parasitic capacitance varies from 0.5 to 1.2 pF depending on the measure component size. This value can be automatically subtracted from the measured value by selecting automatic offset subtraction. This feature makes Smart Tweezers an unrivaled characterization tool for small capacitances and resistances. Without any additional calibration, in addition to the offset subtraction, it can measure capacitance for the order of 1 pF resistance of 10 mOhms.
Smart Tweezers ST-5S offers users component sorting, adjustable test signal levels of 0.2, 0.5 and 1 Volt, and automatic offset subtraction. The ability to use 1 Volt test signal is of crucial importance for testing ceramic capacitors (X5R type and similar). The older models used to read about 30% lower than actual capacitance value due to a non-linearity of this type of capacitors.

LCR-Reader: An LCR-meter for the Non-ProfessionalsThe LCR-Reader is a budget model of tweezer-integrated LCR-meter, consumers now have a choice between Smart Tweezers and the new LCR-Reader. A complete comparison list of all features between Smart Tweezers and LCR-Reader is available here.
The main differences between the new LCR-Reader and Smart Tweezers is the price, size, a slight change in accuracy and a few less features. A consumer’s choice, the LCR-Reader exceeds Smart Tweezers ST-1, ST-2 and ST-3 models. The new device offers a lower weight of 1 oz., half that of previous Smart Tweezers models, a price of less than $200, and a basic accuracy of 1%, though it does not come with a calibration certificate. The LCR-Reader uses only 0.5 Vrms test signal, unlike Smart Tweezers, thus is limited when testing ceramic capacitors. As it is well known that while testing ceramic capacitors with a test signal lower than 1 Vrms results in underestimated capacitance values, this is documented in the ST-2 User’s manual on p.16. All devices use a four-wire connection to the gold-plated tweezer tips, significantly reduces the noise as well as the parasitic capacitance of the probes by more than a factor of two, and are powered by a Li-Ion battery, rechargeable via micro-USB.
The Colibri: More CustomizationThe Colibri is the middle model between Smart Tweezers and the LCR-Reader models. Based on the LCR-Reader, the Colibri offers the same 1% basic accuracy, easy-to-use design and bright OLED but also allows users to select a variable test frequency for more specific measurements. Like Smart Tweezers and the LCR-Reader, the Colibri is able to automatically determine the type of component and the best test mode and parameters for high accuracy results, as well as having manual selection for measurement modes. The feature that sets the Colibri apart from the LCR-Reader is the ability to select the test frequency manually for more specific measurements. When the user presses the button, the device will cycle through the measurement modes (AM, L, C, R, ESR) with variable frequencies of 10 kHz, 1 kHz, and 100 Hz between each mode. To reset the device to fully automatic, just press and hold the button until the screen flashes. The Colibri is priced around $200 (depending on retailer) making it ultimately affordable to non-professionals. The Colibri model does not come with an NIST traceable Calibration Certificate.
