New Calibration Fixture for LCR-Reader
With help from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirk, Siborg has created a new calibration fixture that can perform periodic calibration for LCR-Reader and other Smart Tweezers models. This fixture has been certified by one of Canada's top calibration houses allowing Siborg to create NIST Traceable calibration certificates for LCR-Reader. Read more about the new fixture here
LCR-Reader Store has launched! The store allows customers to read details about each product before adding it to a cart to check out. For the launch, Siborg has begun offering Smart Tweezers and LCR-Reader Task Kits. The kits are pre-assembled boxes with a device, either LCR-Reader or Smart Tweezers ST-5S, and spare or replacement parts. For example, a customer could choose to buy an LCR-Reader with a charger and bent tweezer probes, or a ST-5S with spare precision probes and a battery. These kits offer a better price that buying each piece separately. Visit the redesigned LCR-Reader Stor to see the availableTask Kits
Smart LED Test Tweezers area new device from Siborg Systems Inc. Designed for testing LEDs and other small components, Smart LED Test Tweezers have an output of 12VDC with adjustable current ratings of 20mA, 10mA, and 5mA. The Smart LED Test Tweezers design combines a set of gold-plated phosphor bronze tweezers and a multifunction test device that can test switches, fuses, circuitry, wire connections and SMT. A special connector cable that comes with the device allows users to plug into an LCR-meter to use the LED Tweezers as the probes. Find out more about Smart LED Test Tweezers
New Gold-Plated Bent-Tip DesignA new bent-tip is available for both LCR-Reader and Smart Tweezers. The bent tips make testing more ergonomic by meeting the components mounted on PCBs at a more comfortable angle compared to the straight tips. The devices will still come equipped with straight tips, with the bent-tips as an optional add-on.
Instant Evaluations With Just One TouchThe title says it all, Smart Tweezers will show you component value right when you touch it, no adjustments needed to the component type, test frequency, test signal, etc. Not only will it show the main impedance component L, C or R but also the parasitics, such as R for L, C and C for R.
Built for SimplicityFrom the very beginning Smart Tweezers was designed as a new type of fully-automatic LCR-meter specifically for the characterization of Surface Mount Devices. The key feature is a combination of gold-plated set of tweezers and a digital multimeter integrated into a light-weight nearly pen-sized unit. The benefit of such a design is two-fold: ultimate ease-of-use and very low and well known parasitics.
An Updated Look for a ClassicThe new ST-5S offers users all the same features and functions that has become synonymous with the Smart Tweezers name, but in a smaller, lighter package. The updated look makes the ST-5S the bridge model between Smart Tweezers and the LCR-Reader; a 2 oz. weight and thinner body, with a bright OLED display for better contrast when evaluating.
Beloved by professionals, Smart Tweezers are a sophisticated tool with a basic accuracy of 0.2%, each arriving with an NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate. The high-precision gold plated tweezers allow to easily handle components as small as 0201 size. The low value parasitics are about 1pF capacitance and 30 mOhms resistance of the tweezer tips. The parasitic capacitance varies from 0.5 to 1.2 pF depending on the measure component size. This value can be automatically subtracted from the measured value by selecting automatic offset subtraction. This feature makes Smart Tweezers an unrivaled characterization tool for small capacitances and resistances. Without any additional calibration, in addition to the offset subtraction, it can measure capacitance for the order of 1 pF resistance of 10 mOhms.
Smart Tweezers ST-5S offers users component sorting, adjustable test signal levels of 0.2, 0.5 and 1 Volt, and automatic offset subtraction. The ability to use 1 Volt test signal is of crucial importance for testing ceramic capacitors (X5R type and similar). The older models used to read about 30% lower than actual capacitance value due to a non-linearity of this type of capacitors.
ST-5S Feature Summary

- Basic accuracy of 0.2%
- Automatic selection of the best range
- Component sorting with 1, 5, 10 and 20% tolerance
- Lithium-Ion battery and USB Charger

LCR-Reader: An LCR-meter for the Non-ProfessionalsThe LCR-Reader is a budget model of tweezer-integrated LCR-meter, consumers now have a choice between Smart Tweezers and the new LCR-Reader. A complete comparison list of all features between Smart Tweezers and LCR-Reader is available here.
The main differences between the new LCR-Reader and Smart Tweezers is the price, size, a slight change in accuracy and a few less features. A consumer’s choice, the LCR-Reader exceeds Smart Tweezers ST-1, ST-2 and ST-3 models. The new device offers a lower weight of 1 oz., half that of previous Smart Tweezers models, a price of less than $200, and a basic accuracy of 0.5%, though it does not come with a calibration certificate. The LCR-Reader uses only 0.5 Vrms test signal, unlike Smart Tweezers, thus is limited when testing ceramic capacitors. As it is well known that while testing ceramic capacitors with a test signal lower than 1 Vrms results in underestimated capacitance values, this is documented in the ST-2 User’s manual on p.16. Some features were left off the LCR-Reader that can be found on other Smart Tweezers models, such as; component sorting, parasitic offset subtraction, diode/continuity/voltage measurements, and variable test signals.
Feature Summary for LCR-Reader
- Automatic measurement of L-C-R and ESR
- Basic Accuracy of 0.5%
- Automatic best range
- Li-Ion rechargeable battery, Optional USB Charger
- 28 gram (1 oz) weight
All devices use a four-wire connection to the gold-plated tweezer tips, significantly reduces the noise as well as the parasitic capacitance of the probes by more than a factor of two, and are powered by a Li-Ion battery, rechargeable via micro-USB.
The Colibri: More CustomizationThe Colibri is the middle model between Smart Tweezers and the LCR-Reader models. Based on the LCR-Reader, the Colibri offers the same 1% basic accuracy, easy-to-use design and bright OLED but also allows users to select a variable test frequency for more specific measurements. Like Smart Tweezers and the LCR-Reader, the Colibri is able to automatically determine the type of component and the best test mode and parameters for high accuracy results, as well as having manual selection for measurement modes. The feature that sets the Colibri apart from the LCR-Reader is the ability to select the test frequency manually for more specific measurements. When the user presses the button, the device will cycle through the measurement modes (AM, L, C, R, ESR) with variable frequencies of 10 kHz, 1 kHz, and 100 Hz between each mode. To reset the device to fully automatic, just press and hold the button until the screen flashes. The Colibri is priced around $200 (depending on retailer) making it ultimately affordable to non-professionals. The Colibri model does not come with an NIST traceable Calibration Certificate.
