From the very beginning Smart Tweezers was designed as a new type of a fully-automatic LCR-meter specifically aiming characterization of Surface Mount Devices. The key feature is a combination of gold-plated set of tweezers and a digital multimeter integrated into a light-weight nearly pen-size unit. The benefit of such a design is two-fold: ultimate ease-of-use and very low and well known parasitics.

A New Tweezer Type LCR-meter: LCR-Reader

With the introduction of the new LCR-Reader, a budget model of tweezer-integrated LCR-meter, consumers have a choice between Smart Tweezers and the new LCR-Reader. The main differences between the new LCR-Reader and Smart Tweezers is the price, size and a slight change in accuracy.

Smart Tweezers LCR-Reader

Beloved by professionals, Smart Tweezers are a sophisticated tool with a basic accuracy of 0.2%, each arriving with an NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate. A consumers choice, the LCR-Reader exceeds Smart Tweezers ST-1, ST-2, and ST-3 models. The new device offers a lower weight of 1 oz., half that of previous Smart Tweezers models, a price of less than $200, and a basic accuracy of 1%, though it does not come with a calibration certificate. The LCR-Reader uses only 0.5 Vrms test signal, unlike Smart Tweezers, thus is limited when testing ceramic capacitors. As it is well known that while testing ceramic capacitors with a test signal lower than 1 Vrms results in underestimated capacitance values, this is documented in the ST-2 User's manual on p. 16.

The high-precision gold plated tweezers allow to easily handle components of as smal as 0201 size. The low value parasitics are about 1 pF capacitance and 30 mOhms resistance of the tweezer tips. The parasitic capacitance varies from 0.5 to 1.2 pF depending on the measured component size. This value can be automatically subtracted from the measured value by selecting automatic offset subtraction.

This feature makes Smart Tweezers an unrivaled characterization tool for small capacitances and resistances. Without any additional calibration in addition to the offset subtraction it can measure capacitances of the order of 1 pF and resistance of 10 mOhms.

The higher accuracy compared to the previous model of Smart Tweezers was achieved mainly by using a four-wire connection up-to the very gold-plated tweezer tips. It significantly reduces the noise as well as the parasitic capacitance of the probes by more than a factor of two.

The newly introduced features in Smart Tweezers ST5 is component sorting, adjustable test signal level of 0.2, 0.5 and 1 Volt and automatic offset subtraction. The ability to use 1 Volt test signal is of crucial importance for testing ceramic capacitors (X5R type and similar). The older models used to read about 30% lower than actual capacitance value due to a non-linearity of this type of capacitors. On the- other hand compared to the older models of Smart tweezers voltage measurement was eliminated.

The new Smart Tweezers model ST5 is powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion batteries with a USB port Charger. By using Li-Ion batteries, in contrast to the older rechargeable model STIC-SB, about 10 times higher battery life-time was achieved. The use of a cable connection in contrast to the inductive charger used in STIC-SB drastically improved the charger robustness.
